Lakeland Recce Dalemain to Ambleside, 1st June 2025

These are the FINAL DETAILS for recce weekend 4, which covers the course from Dalemain to Ambleside June 1st. The recce itself actually starts from Pooley Bridge, which is a couple of miles further along the course than Dalemain. It’s approximately 27 miles in total.

The specific times and details are as follows:

Sunday 1st

The coaches will pick up from Rothy Road car park in Ambleside (small car park next to Miller Bridge car park/Recycling Centre). To see the location GO HERE. The W3W location is ///decisions.marker.rental. The coaches will leave at 7:15am, please be there 6:45am at the latest. The coaches will drop off outside the Crown Inn in Pooley Bridge, to see the location GO HERE. and the first coach will arrive approximately 8:00am. If you are going to Pooley Bridge direct, you will need to locate the marshal at that location and check yourself in with them. Please check in at 8:00am. All other competitors will check in when boarding the coaches.

There are 4 checkpoints on this section during race day, only 3 of these will be manned for the recce:

1. Howtown (not manned)
2. Mardale (manned)
3. Kentmere (manned)
4. Ambleside (finish) – THE CHECKPOINT IS OUTSIDE THE PARISH HALL ON VICARAGE LANE

*Based on the above, we suggest that you do not descend the hill to Howtown checkpoint but continue to Mardale (On race day to reach Howtown you have to descend a steep hill for 800m, then retrace your steps back to the route).

What Do I Need To Bring?

You need FULL KIT as per race day guidelines. You will also need a map and/or roadbook to help you navigate. Paper versions and other route details are available HERE. You can print off the relevant section of the roadbook HERE or you can purchase a waterproof map and roadbook HERE.

What’s available at checkpoints?

We’ve arranged for water bowsers to be at each CP and there will be enough water for 300 runners. There will also be basic food, such as flapjack and jelly babies.

THERE ARE NO CUPS at each checkpoint. You should bring bottles or soft flasks to carry your water and top these up and the checkpoints.

Disposing of litter on the route will not be tolerated. Please dispose of all litter in the bin bags at the checkpoints.

General Information

You must make sure you sign in at ALL the checkpoints on the recce route, there are also cut offs in place for each checkpoint.  YOU MUST ensure that you check in at each checkpoint AND THE FINISH.  If you go straight home (or to the pub) we will presume you are missing which could result in a Mountain Rescue call out.

Cut off times

  • Mardale Checkpoint – 5 hours from start
  • Kentmere Checkpoint – 7 hours from start
  • Ambleside – 9 hours from start

In the event of a minor injury that prevents you from carrying on there will be a minibus that can take you back to Ambleside. It is unlikely that you will be taken directly back to Ambleside and there may also be a delay in collecting you, so you must be prepared for a long wait & journey.

NEW CHECK IN SYSTEM

At recce 3 we trialed a new check in system using bar codes which was a success.  Prior to the recce day you will be sent a bar code which you must have available for scanning at the start, finish & all checkpoints.  As you reach a checkpoint, show the bar code to the marshal and they will scan your arrival.

We recommend you screenshot your barcode and save it to your phone which you can then show to the marshals. Just make sure your screen background light is bright enough for the bar code to be visible.  Alternatively print it off. We love to see your genius ideas of how to display your bar code. Bar code wristbands on recce 3 was a particular favourite.

If the last support runner passes a checkpoint and there is an outstanding runner, we will attempt to contact you via your mobile phone provided. To avoid unnecessary phone calls please make sure you check in.

Other things to consider

There will be support runners on the course who know the route, you can identify them by their high viz vest (wearing or attached to their pack).

There will be a medic supporting the day who is contactable via the CP staff. Should you be faced with an emergency which requires mountain rescue, call 999 and provide your location. Our main emergency contact number is 07494 029628 – PLEASE SAVE THIS NUMBERS TO YOUR PHONE., this is for emergency use on the day only, it’s not a general contact number for Lakeland 50 & 100.

We look forwards to seeing you all there!

Regards

The Montane Lakeland 50 & 100 Team
