The second recce covers the ground from Ambleside to Coniston and is relevant for both 50 and 100 mile runners. This is the final 16 miles of the 50 and 100 miles course. The route leaves Ambleside Parish Hall (CP12) and climbs over Loughrigg, before following the main track into Great Langdale to reach CP13 Chapel Stile. From here the route continues to the end of Great Langdale before climbing to Blea Tarn. The next stop is Tilberthwaite (CP14) and Jacob’s Ladder, before one final descent into Coniston and the finish. This section will be a night run, starting and finishing in darkness. You can still register by GOING HERE.
Saturday January 18th
3:30pm Coach pick up at John Ruskin School, Lake Rd, Coniston. Drive to Coniston and use the parking and honesty box at John Ruskin School (///laws.octagonal.nutty). As you board the bus, you will be asked to check your details. Please log into your sientries account and ensure your mobile number is the one you’ll be bringing on the day and your emergency contact is correct.
4:00-4:30pm Coach drop off Ambleside and start run to Coniston. The drop off will be the Rothay Road Car Park in Ambleside (///spray.succumbs.competent), you then need to walk down Vicarage road to Ambleside Parish Centre (///absorbing.beams.revolts) where you will start your recce run.
There will be approximately 300 people on the recce day, setting off over a 15 minute period. If you’re running alone, then we’d encourage you to buddy up with other runners on the course. There will be ‘support guides’ available on the day, identifiable by high vis. They are there to help you navigate but we’d encourage you not to simply ‘follow’ as this is an opportunity for you to navigate and learn. There will also be a rear sweeper on the course, who will most likely be walking. If you should find yourself alone on the course and this m makes you nervous, then you should stop and wait for the next runners or support staff, before joining them.
If you do not require transport and you are heading straight to Ambleside, then YOU MUST ENSURE YOU CHECK IN at the start (check in 4:00-4:30pm at Ambleside Parish Centre) . All other competitors will check in as they board the bus at Coniston. IMPORTANT – No runners can start before 4pm, or we may miss you at a checkpoint and presume you are missing.
What Do I Need To Bring?
For the recce you must ensure that you are carrying the full kit you will be required to carry on race day. The weather on this recce has been extreme in previous years, with snow, rain and sub-zero temperatures, so do not try to travel light. You can see the full kit list HERE. Please make sure your head torches are fully charged and you have spare batteries if required. You will also need map and / or road book to help you navigate. Printable versions and other route details are available HERE, you can download the specific road book section HERE or you can purchase waterproof map and road book HERE.
EMERGENCY PLAN:
If you experience any major injury that prevents you from carrying on then you must contact 999 and then the organisers. If you are unsure of your location, then contact the organiser first as they will be able to help the paramedics pinpoint your location. The emergency phone number is 07494 029628 – PLEASE SAVE THIS NUMBER TO YOUR PHONE. If a runner fails to report to checkpoint within a certain timeframe then the organisers will try to establish phone contact to ensure that they are not in difficulty. Please ensure your phone is turned on
There is an option to shorten the route if you are struggling. When you reach the final Tilberthwaite checkpoint, rather than climbing Jacob’s ladder, you can continue down the road until you reach the main road which heads into Coniston. You should turn right and join the footpath which runs parallel to the road, taking you into Coniston. IMPORTANT – You should still check in at the school or we will presume you are missing.
General Information
You MUST make sure you sign in at all the checkpoints on the recce route and YOU MUST sign in at the end. The staffed checkpoints will be Chapel Stile, Tilberthwaite & Coniston. Please make sure you sign in at Coniston before you go home. If the last support runner passes a checkpoint and there is an outstanding runner, we will attempt to contact you via your mobile phone number provided. NEVER leave the course and go home without letting us know, we will presume you are missing and it may result in a mountain rescue call out.
