Recce Weekend January 21st 2023, Ambleside to Coniston Night Run

The second recce covers the ground from Ambleside to Coniston and is relevant for both 50 and 100 mile runners. This is the final 16 miles of the 50 and 100 miles course. The route leaves Ambleside Parish Hall (CP12) and climbs over Loughrigg, before following the main track into Great Langdale to reach CP13 Chapel Stile. From here the route continues to the end of Great Langdale before climbing to Blea Tarn. The next stop is Tilberthwaite (CP14) and the dreaded stair case, before one final descent into Coniston and the finish. This section will be a night run, starting and finishing in darkness. Saturday January 21st

3:30pm Coach pick up at John Ruskin School, Lake Rd, Coniston. Drive to Coniston and use the parking and honesty box at John Ruskin School. As you board the bus, you will be asked to check your details. Please log into your resultsbase account and ensure your mobile number is the one you’ll be bringing on the day and your emergency contact is correct. 

4:00-4:30pm Coach drop off Ambleside and start run to Coniston. The drop off will be next to Miller Bridge Car Park in Ambleside (///spray.succumbs.competent), walk down Vicarage road to Ambleside Parish Centre (///absorbing.beams.revolts).

There will be ‘guides’ available on the day, to help you navigate but they are not there to ‘follow’. You should be prepared to navigate and learn the route, the guides will support you. There will also be a rear sweeper. 

If you do not require transport and you are heading straight to Ambleside, then YOU MUST ENSURE YOU CHECK IN at the start (check in 3:30-4:00pm at Ambleside Parish Centre) .  All other competitors will check in as they board the bus at Coniston. IMPORTANT – No runners can start before 4pm, or we may miss you at a checkpoint and presume you are missing. 

What Do I Need To Bring?

For the recce you must ensure that you are carrying the full kit you will be required to carry on race day. The weather on this recce has been extreme in previous years, with snow, rain and sub-zero temperatures, so do not try to travel light. You can see the full kit list HERE. Please make sure your head torches are fully charged and you have spare batteries if required. You will also need map and  / or road book to help you navigate. EMERGENCY PLAN:

If you experience any major injury that prevents you from carrying on then you must contact 999 and then the organisers. If you are unsure of your location, then contact the organiser first as they will be able to help the paramedics pinpoint your location. The emergency phone number is 07494 029628 – PLEASE SAVE THIS NUMBERS TO YOUR PHONE.

If a runner fails to report to checkpoint within a certain timeframe then the organisers will try to establish phone contact to ensure that they are not in difficulty. Please ensure your phone is turned on

General Information

You must make sure you sign in at all the checkpoints on the recce route. These are at Chapel Stile, Tilberthwaite & Coniston. Please make sure you sign in at Coniston before you go home. If the last support runner passes a checkpoint and there is an outstanding runner, we will attempt to contact you via your mobile phone number provided. To avoid unnecessary phone calls please make sure you check in. There will be water & snacks supplied at Chapel Stile & Tilberthwaite.
